Night Mayor of Maastricht 2020

Five candidates will be selected based on all the entries we received during the Open Call. Together with the public (online voting) as well as an official jury (Plea for the Night), the Night Mayor will ultimately be chosen during the 5th edition of Museumnacht Maastricht on Friday 17 April 2020!

The process :

  • > Tuesday 12 March: Publication Top 5
  • Time to introduce the five candidates that are still in the running for the title Night Mayor of Maastricht 2020. Everyone can share their vote online for their favorite candidate as Night Mayor of Maastricht. As of now the candidates will also prepare for their 'Plea for the Night' during Museumnacht Maastricht in the Jan van Eyck Academy.
  •
  • > Friday 17 April: Plea (from 21:00 to 22:30) in front of the Jury
During Museumnacht Maastricht, based on the public votes (50%) as well as their 'Plea of the Night', the jury will decide who will be named Night Mayor of Maastricht 2020. Afterwards, his/her first public appearance awaits during the official afterparty at the Muziekgieterij/Soto Club.

What we offer:

• The honorary title of Night Mayor of Maastricht 2020
• A check of €500 that can be used in your role as Night Mayor
• A bespoke piece of jewellery, created by Maastricht designer Minou Lejeune
• Your first speech as Night Mayor during the official Museumnacht Maastricht afterparty in the Muziekgieterij/ Soto Club
• A quarterly editorial voice to put the spotlight on Maastricht's Nightlife in the WeekINWeekUIT
• A promotional video and 'Vote for' poster for the selected five candidates

This initiative is a first step towards strengthen the dialogue between night owls and day makers in Maastricht. Something that Museumnacht Maastricht - as an Art Night Out - has always been committed to as well, since its establishment in 2016. The future Night Mayor must therefore embrace a broad perspective, speak the right language to initiate collaboration and have a strong connection with multiple scenes in the city; from student life and cultural hotspots to the many distinctive cafes in Maastricht. Someone who feels alive at night and is passioned about art - in the broadest sense of the word and in every possible shape - and who can and wants to enrich Maastricht's Nightlife.

The jury: "The right candidate certainly can be a tad pleasantly crazy with a great sense of humor, but he/she must not secretly be a morning person after all, and needs to promise not to just fall out of love with the night as soon as another love walks into his/her life. "

Nachtburgemeester Maastricht 2020 is an initiative in collaboration with Museumnacht Maastricht. A special thanks goes out to Artspace B32/Joep Vossebeld, Simone Schuffelen and Mike Moonen, as well as the jury experts Willem Hermans, Manon Joha, Laetitia Teta and the Muziekgieterij. With additional support of the Jan van Eyck Academy and WeekINWeekUIT, and a 'good luck' of Frans Theunisz, who at the age of 74 is more than busy with his performances and the organisation of Kadefeesten.
