An inspiring perspective on the history of the Pilgrimage of the Relics
14 March till 31 August 2025 | Maastricht Museum
From 14 March 2025 Maastricht Museum presents a remarkable exhibition that brings the rich tradition of the Pilgrimage of the Relics to life. This centuries-old tradition, intertwining religion, cultural history, and commerce, is reimagined through an exhibition filled with captivating stories and historical masterpieces.
Visitors are taken on a journey through time, from the Middle Ages to the present. Historical masterpieces from the museum’s own collection are combined with unique loans from both national and international institutions. One of the highlights is the return of the Servatius Panels, exquisite gilded silver reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Saint Servatius, on loan from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. These invaluable works of art are returning to Maastricht for the first time.
In addition, special objects from the collection of the Centre Charlemagne in Aachen shed light on how pilgrims planned their journeys around the display of relics. Local treasures, closely tied to Maastricht's renowned city devotions, are also showcased, offering an in-depth view of the city's rich cultural heritage.
The exhibition also builds a bridge to the modern era. Pilgrimage is no longer solely associated with religion but also with contemporary rituals such as concerts and carnival. These shared experiences highlight how community and spirituality remain enduringly relevant across centuries.
We invite everyone to discover and experience this unique chapter of Maastricht's history.
