Arno Schuitemaker – The Way You Sound Tonight / Cycle 1
22:20 - 23:20
Theater aan het Vrijthof: Papyrus Hall
One of the highlights of Museumnacht Maastricht 2020: The Way You Sound Tonight of Arno Schuitemaker, winner of the prestigious 'Zwaan' award of most impressive dance production 2019 by the VSCD—the Oscar of Dutch dance.
The Way You Sound Tonight is a mind-blowing experience of pulsating dance and electronic music in one hypnotizing synergy. Boundless in energy, The Way You Sound Tonight streams and steams. It is an intensifying and trance-like experience that transcends, and then lastingly resounds. Do not miss it!
During Museumnacht Maastricht two audience groups can join this hypnotizing continuum. At 22:20 the first cycle starts and at 23:20 the second cycle starts. For a full-on experience joining both cycles is recommendable.
potentially, this performance is infinite
in the infinity, it is all about now
every now is new
Radically enacting a temporal experience of the eternal, five performers bring continuous cycles of pulsating movements into being: a rousing universe that shimmers and elates.
"The Way You Sound Tonight is one of those theater experiences you want to last forever. The dance, the staging of performers and audience, the ongoing stream of music, it all is perfectly right." - VSCD Dance jury 2019.
With audiences sitting on opposite sides across the stage and music all-pervading, the performers—like breath and heartbeat—keep going without any stop in regenerative expansions of space, distance and proximity, night and day. A new intensity dawns: the present never felt so apparent.
Each audience group experiences one hour. Always evolving, the mutual composition of the performers changes each cycle. The performer ending the first cycle, starts the second one and a next audience group enters. It is like returning to a beginning, an echo from the past that resounds and moves into the future. Again and again, this unity ignites a strong synergy that transcends just about everything.
In October 2019, The Way You Sound Tonight received the award of most impressive dance production, the Oscar of Dutch dance. Arno Schuitemaker created The Way You Sound Tonight in collaboration with composer/guitarist Aart Strootman and lighting designer Jean Kalman. The premiere at the Holland Festival 2018 was “one of the highlights”, according to Cultuurpers.
"Hypnotizing movements and electronic minimal music. This is about energy, it creates tension, and it makes you hold you breath." VPRO
