The Floor is Lava

The theatrical exhibition The Floor is Lava is created by artists’ duo Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen, who will populate Marres with sculptures and molded portraits in staged situations: people queuing at an office counter, travelers at a station etc. The premise of the exhibition is that people always perform roles. Such a role implies notable character traits, a specific ‘mask’, typical body language, a space, and fitting props such as clothing and bags. Visitors roam the spaces in which these lives seem to have been frozen. Videos and performances are on display in between the sculptures. The Floor is Lava is the fourth in a series of immersive exhibitions at Marres. Previous projects in this series were Dreaming Awake(2018), The Painted Bird: Dreams and Nightmares of Europe(2017) and Levi van Veluw: The Relativity of Matter (2015-16).
